Applies to:Sun StorageTek SL8500 Modular Library SystemAll Platforms Checked for relevance on 9-Feb-2011. GoalHow to collect problem information using SLConsole.SolutionSteps to FollowUse the following steps to acquire information from SL Console: 1. Log in to Motive Insight. 2. Press 'Remote Devices', select site by Site Name from drop down list. 3. Locate and press 'Remote Control' on SL8500, verifying by serial number if more than one listed. 4. Under 'Select a remote control tool', choose the highest version of SL Console that is currently installed on your machine. (It is recommended to always use the latest version). Press OK. 5. Enter User ID: 'advsrv', Password: 'XXXXXX', and paste the IP address from the popup window labeled 'IP Information' into Library. Press Log On and wait for the connection to complete. 6. Look for any devices with Yellow or Red indicators. Use drop down tabs to display individual devices. Clicking on any device will show information about it's Access State (eg. online/offline), Health State (eg. ok/not ok), and Device State (Ready/Not Ready). For tape drives, the properties tab also displays useful information about the drive type, interface type, and World Wide Name. 7. Find and record the current level of microcode running on the Oracle/StorageTek[TM] SL8500 by going to Tools-Diagnostics, Activate Code tab, then select SL8500 code from the Target drop down menu. 8. Review and record events from the SL8500 event log by going to Tools-Reports, expand the list below Permanent Reports, select Event Log. It is easiest to press the Save button and save the file to your hard drive (*as a text file and not the default HTML*). Then open the file using notepad. The oldest events are at the top so do a search for today's date by pressing control-F and searching for (for example) '2006-08-16'. 9. If info, warning, or error messages are found, use common-sense troubleshooting to help isolate the problem. Are the errors occurring on the same LSM? Same Panel? Same Drive? Watch for lots of 'hits' occurring in one day on the same device. Copy and paste any relevant log entries into the case notes.
