Description
This document provides the basic steps to review External Storage state, configuration, and settings information using the Browser or SSCS user interfaces. Use this document if:
  • External Storage devices are not listed in the UI
  • External Storage devices are missing information
  • Syntax/Usage is needed to get external storage state/details

If you are looking for basic administrative tasks on the 6920, please reference

Note: Each of the steps below offer links to best practices and product documentation, as part of the resolution of your issue. Please do not skip a step.

Steps to Follow
Validating External Storage State and Details on a Sun StorEdge[TM] 6920:

A. Validate Usage and External Storage device listing

SSCS

The basic usage for listing all of the External Storage devices can be gotten by:

sscs list externalstorage

This will list all of the External Storage Devices reported by the 6920 array.
Most of the time, you will want to review the details of a particular external storage device:

sscs list externalstorage <external storage device>

Where the details listed include:

External Storage Disk Name(the disk device path)
Storage Domain
Storage Pool
Model (product model from SCSI inquiry)
Vendor (product vendor from SCSI inquiry)
Array (6920 System Name for device)
Device WWN (Device WWN from external storage)
State
Status
Total Capacity (raw byte size)

  • If you believe that you should see an external storage device, issue the following sscs command:

sscs rescan system

and list the External Storage again. If you still do not see additional storage, reference document <Document: 1004146.1> Validating External Storage Attachment for a StorEdge[TM] 6920 Array.

BUI

The basic usage for listing all of the External Storage devices can be gotten by:

  1. Click Configuration Services or Common Array Manager Link
  2. Click Logical Storage
  3. Click External Storage

This will display a listing of all External Storage devices seen by the 6920 system. Fields include:

Name (the disk device path)
Array (6920 System Name for device)
Pool
Model (product model from SCSI inquiry)
Vendor (product vendor from SCSI inquiry)
Array (6920 System Name for device)
WWN (Device WWN from external storage)
Status
Legacy Volume Name (if any exists)
Total Capacity (raw byte size)

  • If you believe that you should see an external storage device, click on the Rescan Devices link. This will probe the array for new devices, and reported them in the same table in the External Storage link.
  • If you still do not see additional storage, reference  <Document: 1004146.1> Validating External Storage Attachment for a StorEdge[TM] 6920 Array.

Otherwise continue to Step B.

B. Validate External Storage State

  • If the external storage state is anything but OK go to Step D.

Otherwise continue to Step C.

C. Validate External Storage Size

The device size shown via SSCS will always be in bytes. The size shown in the BUI will be shown as follows:

  • If created in Units of Blocks or Kilobytes(KB), and less than 1 Gigabyte(GB), the size will be displayed in units of Megabytes(MB), rounded to the thousandths decimal place in the BUI.
  • If created in Units of Blocks, KB, or MB, and greater than 1 GB, the size will be displayed in units of GB, rounded to the thousandths decimal place in the BUI.
  • If created in Units of Blocks, KB, MB, or GB, and greater than 1 Terabyte(TB), the size will be displayed in units of TB, rounded to the thousandths decimal place in the BUI.

Additionally the device size will be 128MB less than the device size shown by the external storage array, IF you have imported the storage as raw capacity. Reference document   <Document: 1004146.1> Validating External Storage Attachment for a StorEdge[TM] 6920 Array.
NOTE : The size of the device from the external storage array can only be checked through that array's user interface. See your system administrative guide for that storage array.

If the size is satisfactory, you have successfully validated the state and details of your external storage device. Consider Reviewing the 6920 Best Practices Guide, or document <Document: 1004146.1> Validating External Storage Attachment for a StorEdge[TM] 6920 Array.

D. Data Collection for Missing or Incorrect External Storage Information

Please collect the following:

  • 6920 Solution Extract. Reference Document [[link:http|83343]] How to collect an extractor from a Sun StorEdge[TM] 6920 (2.x and 3.x)
  • sscs list output showing external storage details
  • Screen capture showing external storage page
  • Data Collection for devices on external storage
  • External Storage Array Vendor and Model.
