Goal

Description

This document describes how to reset a Chassis Monitoring Module (CMM) on
Sun Blade6000 or Sun Blade 6048 systems and monitor the boot output.. This is useful when a hang of the CMM is preventing a login to the CMM ILOM

Purpose/Scope

This document describes how to reset a CMM on Sun Blade6000 or Sun Blade 6048 systems and monitor the boot output on the serial output.

Steps to Follow

Steps to follow to reset and monitor a Sun Blade 6000 or 6048 Chassis Monitoring Module

Use the following procedure only if you can't shutdown or reboot the CMM gracefully, for example:
-> reset /CMM
typically when your system is hung.

Ensure that the serial connection on the CMM is correctly cabled and the output is monitored and logged before beginning the procedure. Refer to Document: 1019314.1 Procedure for connecting to the CMM ILOM using a Serial Connection on a Sun Blade 6000/6048

How to reset the CMM

Remove the CMM

1. In the rear of the chassis, locate the CMM. Refer to:

2. Press together and hold the ejector button on the module ejector lever.

3. To unlatch the module from the chassis, pull the ejector lever away from the module and up.

4. Pull the ejector lever toward you until you are able to pull the rest of the module out by hand.


Note: The fans will run at 100% when the CMM is removed.


With the serial connection still connected insert the CMM

1. Align the CMM with the CMM slot. Ensure that the CMM indicator lights of the CMM on the front panel are on the top of the module and facing you.

2. Slide the CMM into the vacant CMM chassis slot.
Ensure that the CMM engages with the system chassis guidance system.

3. Complete the installation by closing the ejector lever to secure the CMM in the chassis.

After you physically install a CMM in a powered-on system, the CMM automatically begins its initialization.
If you have installed the CMM in a powered-off system, the CMM goes through the following sequence of operations:

  • CMM receives 3-volt auxiliary standby power and comes out of reset. While the CMM boots up, the green OK indicator on the CMM is set to the Slow Blink state.
  • When the CMM has booted, the CMM sets the green OK indicator on the front indicator (FIM) and chassis management module (CMM) to the Standby Blink state, indicating that the chassis is now ready for full power

While the above is happening, monitor the serial connector output for the U boot and Linux start messages and note any errors.

If the reset is successful then a login prompt similar to the one below should be displayed and it should be possible to log in as root.
