Description
Procedure to verify the serial cabling on Netra CT900
Purpose/Scope:

This document will focus on verifying the correct connection and the serial cabling required for set up and management of the Sun[TM] Netra CT900. It will therefor cover connection to the Shelf Management Modules and Switches.

It is expected that connection to the Server Node boards will be covered by standard documentation which can be found at http://www.docs.sun.com

Symptoms:
-Unable to connect
-Unalbe to connect to blade
-User cannot access
-User needs help cabling system
-Host not reachable
-Connection failed

Steps to Follow
Follow these steps to verify the correct serial wiring for the Netra CT 900
  • Confirm the wiring of the attached cables

The pin connections for all the serial ports sockets used on the Sun Netra CT900 are in the table below.

If using a crossover cable from a PC or similar the wiring should be as below

This can also be achieved using a straight through RJ45 to RJ45 cable and a serial adapter Sun part number 530-3100

See Sun Systems Handbook for details of pin locations http://www.sunsolve.sun.com/handbook_pub

  • Verify the serial cable connections

Initial configuration of the boards within the Sun Netra CT900 will be through the serial port. Cable connections should be checked for correct location and fitting.

  • Shelf Management Modules

Note - There are no serial cable connections directly to the shelf management modules. The serial connection for both the ShMMs are routed internally to the two RJ45 connectors on the front panel of the Shelf Alarm Panel which is at the top of the chassis. The upper ShMM connects to the left socket, and the lower ShMM connects to the right socket.

  • Switch boards

Each Switch Board comprises two separate switch units, a Base (3.0) Network and an Extended (3.1) Network (also known as the Fabric Network). On the Netra CP3140 each of these has a serial connection for set up and management, whereas the Netra CP3240 has a single common serial management port.

  • Netra CP3140 1Gb Network Switch

The physical connection to each of the switch units is an RJ45 socket on the front panel of the board. The Base Network serial port is the bottom most RJ45 connector, with the Extended Network serial connector immediately above it.

Each switch board has the option to have a Rear Transmission Module (RTM) fitted. When this is fitted, there are alternative sockets available to connect the serial cable for each of the switch units. You may only connect and use either the front panel sockets or the RTM sockets as shown in the table below. Check which port has been configured for selection.

  • Netra CP3240 10 Gb Network Switch

The Netra CP3240 10Gb network switch has a single common serial management port. It is an RJ 45 socket located on the front panel immediately below the Advance Mezzanine Card (AMC) slots. There are two optional RTMs for the Netra CP3240, referred to as the CX4 RTM and the XFP RTM. Each of these provides the option for rear connection to the serial management port. On the CX4 RTM which is the standard RTM, there are 4 RJ45 sockets located towards the middle of the RTM. The serial management port is the top RJ45 connector. Routing of the serial connection can be controlled by software or forced to the front or to the RTM by the setting of Jumper P13 on the switch board.

  • Verify serial connection parameters

The device being used to access the Netra CT900 should be checked to ascertain what parameters are being used. By default, the serial connection for the ShMM is configured for 115200 baud, no parity, 8 data bits, and 1 stop bit. This differs from the Sun standard default used on the node and switch boards which are 9600 baud, no parity, 8 data bits, and 1 stop bit.

  • Check serial connection response

If the previous user had followed good practice the connection should be left waiting for login details. Pressing <CR> should trigger an output giving either a login prompt or a request for password. If the password prompt is visible, characters typed will not be echoed so a further <CR> should be typed to return to the login prompt.

Type the user name required depending which board is being accessed. The characters should be echoed back as typed. This will verify correct operation of the serial connection. You may now continue to log in and use the connection.
