Description
This document describes how to verify the incoming power and power distribution
within the Netra[TM] CT 900

Symptoms

  • Shelf dead

  • Chassis dead

  • Blade dead

  • Can't power up Blade

Purpose/Scope

The Netra CT 900 chassis has eight power input feeds split across two redundant Power Entry Modules. Within the Shelf (chassis), these supplies are spread across four zones. This document describes the procedures to check that the power is present and correct at the input to the Sun Netra CT 900 and that the power distribution within the shelf is correctly configured to supply the power required for the boards that are installed.

Steps to Follow
These are the steps to follow
  • Verify the state of the LEDs on each of the boards

The LEDs on each board will help to identify whether the problem is localized to a single board or affects a group of components or even the entire shelf.

See <Document: 1019516.1>

  • Verify the shelf has incoming power

The Netra CT900 has two redundant power entry modules known as PEMs located at the rear of the shelf. These PEMs take -48V DC power inputs and distribute power to the rest of the system. Each of the feeds should be individually protected via circuit breakers. The loss of an individual feed or a complete PEM should not cause the shelf to go down.

If the shelf appears completely dead, i.e. no LEDS illuminated, or no sound of fans turning, verify external power is available and that the circuit breakers are in the on position. Any problems in this area may require the assistance of the site electrician.

  • Verify available shelf power

Early model chassis referred to the Power Entry Modules as PEM-A and PEM-B.

Later models refer to them as PEM-1 and PEM-2. The following table indicates the origin of each feed (numbered 0 through 7) and the zones they support (numbered 1 through 4).

If zone 2 and or zone 3 power is available, then one or both the shelf managers (ShMM) will power up and allow access to the system for further checks.

Log into the active shelf manager using either the serial management port connection via the alarm card (refer to document <Document: 1019404.1> or through the network (assumes network connected and active). Refer to documents <Document: 1017986.1> and <Document: 1005533.1> verifying external network

  • Confirm you are on the active ShMM

  • Verify the incoming power feeds are present using the clia shelf power distribution command

Check the value for the parameter "Maximum External Available Current" for feed 00 through to feed 07 is showing 28 amps. If power is missing from an individual feed it will show 0 amps.

This output also shows the FRU address for each of the boards on a particular feed. The "FRU Addr" given in this output is the Hardware Address of the board. To convert to a physical board refer to document <Document: 1019506.1>

  • Check the power requirement matches the power allowance for each slot using the clia shelf -v power_management command

The amount of power allowed by the Shelf manager for the slot is shown by the parameter "Maximum FRU Power Capabilities". Note: These values differ depending on the Chassis/ShMM firmware level.

The amount of power requested by the board and subsequently allocated is shown by the parameter "Currently Assigned Power"

If the board requests more power than is allowed for the slot, the board will not power up
