In this Document
Applies to:Sun Fire X4450 Server - Version: Not ApplicableInformation in this document applies to any platform. GoalHow to Remove and Replace a Sun Fire X4450 DIMMSolutionDISPATCH INSTRUCTIONSWHAT SKILLS DOES THE ENGINEER NEED:(IS A SITE ENGINEER AVAILABLE?) General Sun X86 servers hardware knowledge. Some awareness about the specifics of FB DIMMS (in comparison of common DDRx DIMMs in the PC world for instance). DELIVERY REQUIREMENT: This replacement implies a completed shutdown and poweroff of the servers. So replacement will clearly take place during a maintenance window FIELD ENGINEER INSTRUCTIONS PROBLEM OVERVIEW: Replace a specific FB-DIMM. *CAUTION* : FB DIMMs come in pairs ! That means we will replace an even number of FB DIMMs. WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? Use of Solaris FM commands such as : # fmdump -v # fmadm clear <UUID> if Solaris is the installed OS and if fmdump -v reports a faulty DIMM for the date of fault reported by the Customer/Sun Support engineer. Also a clean shutdown is required. Leave this to the customer unless agreed otherwise. WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE: 0. Make sure it is possible to completely pull out the server out of its rack, if racked. It may imply to remove some network cables or optical fibers. Best is to write down a simple wiring diagram prior to beginning the replacement operation. 1. Shutdown of the host, make sure the host is powered off 2. Remove the power cords 3. Pull out the server 4. Remove its top cover. 5. Locate the FB DIMMs to be replaced. 6.Remove the concerned FBDIMMs by pushing both edges at a slow pace. Place DIMMs even if faulty on a ESD mate. 7. Make sure the new DIMMs are the same p/n than the removed ones. 8. Make sure of their positioning (pay attention to the "nodge" ob both FBDIMMs and Mainboard) 9. Evenly and gently press down the DIMM into its slots. Should a "resistance" occur, DO NOT FORCE ! Remove the DIMM, check nodge, check p/n and retry step 8. 10. Replace top cover, push in the server into its racks, reconnect all the unplugged cables and then 11. Put back in place the power cords. OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE: 1. Best is to fully monitor the BIOS startup to make sure all expected memory is present. 2. Bootup the OS 3. If the OS is Solaris, check fmadm/fmdump command outputs 4. Check total memory available and monitor error logs to check any new memory error messages PARTS NOTE: DIMM come always in pair. Also check p/n as it is not permitted to mix different part numbers inside the same DIMM group. Also check memory installations rules. REFERENCE INFORMATION: X4450 Server Service Manual http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E19150-01/ TIME ESTIMATE: About 30 minutes from the moment the OS is shutdown to the moment the OS is about to startup.
