GoalHow To Remove and Replace X4100/X4100 M2 HBA CardSolutionDISPATCH INSTRUCTIONSWHAT SKILLS DOES THE ENGINEER NEED: General Sun X86 servers hardware knowledge. General knowlegde about HBAs & IOs. Awareness of differences between PCI-X (long connector) and PCI-e (short connector) DELIVERY REQUIREMENT: As usual, this kind of replacement requires a complete production stop on the concerned server. Thus, unless specified otherwise, this needs to be scheduled accordingly with customer. ESTIMATE AP DURATION: About 30 minutes from OS shutdown to power up of the server after part replacement. FIELD ENGINEER INSTRUCTIONS WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? As usual with any HBA replacement, its replacement may imply other changes in the system. For instance, replacing a network interface may impact everything based on MAC addresses. Recommendation is to make sure we have a very recent explorer prior to the hardware operation. WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE: Make sure about the location of the HBA to be replaced. If OS is Solaris, pay attention to outputs of the following commands : # fmadm faulty # fmdump -v There are situations when HBA card is to be replaced WITHOUT any Solaris FMA notifications Recommendation is to make a short diagram of all installed PCIe cards and corresponding connected cables. STEPS : 1. Shutdown of host, make sure host is powered off 2. Remove power cords. 3. Pull out server 4. Remove its top cover. 5. Note accurate location of PCI card to be replaced 6. Unplug all cables from the card. 7. Carefully remove PCIe or PCI-X card from riser board connector. 8. Place PCIe card on an antistatic mat and write down both p/n and s/n THEN NEW PART installation instructions: 1. Unpack replacement PCIe card and place it on an antistatic mat. Write down both p/n and s/n 2. If necessary, replace long bracket by provided short one. 3. Insert PCIe or PCI-Xcard into correct slot onto mainboard 4. Secure HBA in its location : 4.1 Insert PCI card into PCI card slot. Ensure that PCI card's rear connector panel engages tab in chassis rear panel. 4.2 . Pivot PCI card latch closed over rear connector panel of PCI card until it is locked in. 5. Replace top cover, push in server into its racks, reconnect all unplugged cables and then 6. Replace power cords. OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE: A. check the new part is recognized during BIOS bootup process B. Check that newly installed card is correctly recognized by OS C. If OS is Solaris, and FMA was involved in failure detection of the card, run the convenient fmadm commands to update FMA internal databases about maintenance of card D. If necessary, perform any additionnal step of reconfigruation due to presence of the new card (for instance,if this is a network card, it may be necessary to modify /etc/ethers file).
