Goal

How many hours do one need to perform SL8500 Redundant Electronics Conversion?

Solution

The Redundant Power Conversion has been done during a new install of the library.
The instructions tell you to build the library first, and bring it up to full functionality.  Then to add the RE.
Times may vary but the work can be completed in about 2 hours.
Most of the time is spent loading code.

A few things that may add some time to your install:
1) Current microcode level of the library
2) Current power configuration.  n+1 or 2n.  You have to be at 2n.
3) If both PUE cards need to be added.
4) Configuring for dual TCPIP.

A couple things to watch out for:

1. I recommend removing all the blanking plates to the right of the new HBC and HBT cards.  It will make insertion of the new cards much easier, and you can see if the cards are going in straight.  We bent pins on our first install.  The motherboard required replacement.
2. To configure the standby network.  Plug into the standby HBC's CLI port and configure normally.  Trying to configure the network from the active side doesn't work at this time.
3. You should get microcode 6.04 or higher code installed.

Should you have any issues, contact Tape Hardware Support via MOS and reference this knowledge entry.
